Canada – International Students’ Most Appealing Destination
According to an international education survey, factors such as safety, affordability, and work opportunities have made Canada the study destination most attractive for international students.
The ICEF- igraduate Agent Barometer, which is an annual survey, queries education agents in over 100 countries to get information about choices made by students in their respective countries concerning international study destinations.
The latest survey, conducted between the months of September and October 2017, received 1436 responses. The findings not only explain shifts in student perceptions and destination appeal but also reveal insights showing why students select certain institutions and countries.
Student destination concerns & preferences
One of the issues examined by the survey is students concerns in relation to eight key categories, including; financial issues, security/safety, study visa requirements etc.
The results gathered from the survey indicate a heightened personal safety concern. In fact, recent political climate changes in the United Kingdom and the United States have led to a decrease in the number of students deciding to study in these two countries.
A 2016 study covering over 2000 American universities and colleges revealed international students enrollments began to plateau towards the end of 2016. Ever since, international student’s enrollments have been slowly decreasing.
Nevertheless, other countries’ universities have benefitted from this trend. To be specific, Canadian universities have had major gains due to the student preference changes. Many students have chosen Canada as their alternative destination.
The Canadian advantage
In addition to Canada emerging as an international student’s most attractive choice, the 2016 enrollment data indicated that the number of foreign students enrolling in Canadian universities increased by 17.5%.
Angie Barogue , a senior policy analyst at IRCC noted that 17.5% represented a sharp rise since the annual increase rate of foreign students enrollment has been at around 5% in the previous years.
As much as President Donald Trump’s policies may have led to an increase in Canada’s popularity, quotidian concerns have also played a role in ensuring many international students choose Canadian universities. The latest survey for IDP Student Buyer Behavior shows how factors like safety, affordability, visa requirements and graduate employment opportunities, have increased Canada’s attractiveness.
What’s more, in Canada international students exhibit higher satisfaction levels thanks to marvelous study experiences.
Benefits for students who want to study in Canada
The following are some of the many attractions Canada has for potential international students:
- Students in Canada have access to many different scholarships.
- International students are able to work as they study. This means they can apply and get jobs off-campus, therefore, accessing a large pool of employment opportunities.

Whether potential students are looking to settle in York University residence or any other residence out there, in Canada, the benefits outweigh the risks making this one of the better parts of the world to study in.
