Tips to Find a Holiday Season Job

Christmas is fast approaching and you should expect numerous job vacancies that target students to come up in this last month of the year. Most employers will start looking for candidates as early as October. As a student, you need to upgrade your job search skills and get a great opportunity to gain experience while making some money on the side. The best part about many of these jobs is that they don’t require much experience. College students at any level can apply. There’s also a wide range of positions to choose from giving you a chance to expand your skills in different fields.

Jobs in retail

Among the jobs to target are those offered by retail stores. Most retailers will expand as it approaches the holiday season in order to deal with the upsurge in customers. In retail, you can fit perfectly in jobs that don’t require any experience to handle. A few things you can do in the retail stores include:

  • Shelf-stacking
  • Work as a sales associate
  • Be employed as a cashier
  • Wrap customer gifts
  • Provide customer service at the malls

Restaurants

Restaurants and catering providers also tend to boost their staff during the festivities because there are usually more parties they are hired to serve. There’s so much you can do in the food service and hospitality industry with little or no experience. For instance, you can be hired as a waiter, waitress, hostess/host, cashier or security officer. Students can also be considered for roles such as food deliveries, drivers and meal preparers in restaurants.

Where to find job openings

Other than applying for jobs online, you can visit the restaurants, malls, and plazas in your area and ask if they have any positions available for students. Most companies like fast food outlets will agree to do a quick interview when you visit them if they have an opening. If you are looking for vacation-related work such as tree cutting, ski staff or pet care, you can visit areas such as pet grooming stores, ski resorts, and recreation centers. When paying a visit, go with a copy of your CV at hand. They may not consider your skill and experience in order to give you the job but it shows that you are professional and capable of taking the task given seriously. Also, do some background information about the job before approaching the company/owner. It will help you to be confident and prepared when asked questions during the brief interview.

Good reasons to get a holiday season job

The best part about holiday season jobs is that you’re only there for a limited period of time. You also get to explain why you’re looking for the job, perhaps to pay for your tuition or get additional experience. It’s so much easier to find a temporary position especially during the festivities when the demand is really high. Additionally, you might even get amazing discounts when doing your own personal purchases.
