How to Get a House during your Second Year in University

If you began your undergraduate program a year ago, the chances are that you are now thinking about how you will get a student house during the second year of your study. Here are a few tips to help you get a perfect house.

If you already don’t know whom you intend to live with, don’t rush

Most students panic during the beginning of the first year as they think that they must make friends or they won’t get someone to live with. But a good friendship needs time to grow. Besides, it takes time for you to get convinced that you can live with a particular student or not. Therefore, deciding to choose someone to live with isn’t a decision you can rush.

Consider consulting a letting agent when it’s necessary

Keep in mind that letting agents tend to charge high amounts, perhaps to cover the expenses associated with handling endless paperwork and showing you around the available houses. This is quite helpful, but if you’re smart and don’t want to spend too much money, you can get a good place to stay without the help of a letting agent.
You can consider checking the apartments near York University in case you don’t have any accommodation yet. In many cities and towns, you will find listings which are made by the landlord rather than the agents. If you must consult a letting agent, then, you shouldn’t let their sales patter fool you.

Choose the location carefully

If you intend to live in an expensive city, it’s tempting to move to the cheapest area because you don’t want to pay high rent. However, it’s advisable to stay in York University housing and pay slightly more expensive rent than to pay cheap rent far away from the school and incur huge travel expenses when traveling to and from the university.
You should also check the surrounding area and ensure that it has the right facilities. Find out if there is a supermarket nearby. Is there a club nearby which is likely too noisy each night? These minor considerations can mean a big difference, and you would rather pay more and live in comfort rather than be in a cheap place.

Don’t forget to check the shower

This is something most students ignore especially when looking around for a place to live. Always turn the shower on when looking around for a great place to live. If you don’t, you may end up having weak, awkward showers for the rest of the year.

If you’ve found a place to live, distribute the bills among the students, you will live with

Note that there are limited ways of sharing out the bill responsibilities. Most flats choose one person to be in charge of all the others. That means one person will be responsible for the water, internet, gas and electric bills. This is a huge responsibility, and everyone has to pay a certain amount for these bills to the person in charge. Alternatively, each of you can take responsibility for one bill.
