The Dos and Don’ts of Packing Up for Campus

When the time comes to start packing up for your move, you may feel anxious, excited and confused at the same time. You probably don’t want to leave anything you’ll need behind. We’ll help to make the packing process a little easier by sharing a few tips to move to York U residence with ease.

Start with the essentials

Draft a list of things you’ll probably need to use on a daily basis. This includes stuff such as personal toiletries, hygiene products, shampoo, toothbrush, hand sanitizer and the like. Start with these essentials and make sure you pack them beforehand since you’ll need them when living on campus near York University.

Consider electronics

There are items that you can carry such as a small fridge for your snacks and drinks. Some facilities already have refrigerators so make sure you find out before packing this up. Remember to carry your personal computer, printer and printing supplies. You may also need some additional lamps and lighting in your room.

Carry extra beddings

Though the York University housing is likely to provide you with a standard bed with mattress, it’s important to have your own blankets, sheets and pillows. They will come in handy when you need to clean up.

Carry your dishes too

Remember to pack up some dishes, cutlery, mugs and glasses. Don’t be tempted to fill your suitcase with lots of dishes. Just carry one or two of each kind since you probably won’t need too many of them in your room. Most of the time you’ll find yourself eating out especially in the first months.

Important documents to remember

Don’t pack up everything else and forget to carry your important documents. This includes your admission letter and room assignment information. The documents required will vary from residence to another but just carry all you have including your identification documents if you are a foreign student, just to be safe. Some pens, pencils and other school essentials will also come in handy.

Items you’ll need for convenience

You may consider carrying your bicycle and bike lock from home. At York University, you probably won’t need a bike to get around since you can walk to anywhere within York University housing in less than 15 minutes. But find out if your housing facility has a slot to pack your bike before you pack it up.

What not to carry

Don’t carry any alcoholic drink when you first move to school. This includes alcohol paraphernalia like funnels, bottles, kegs, bubbas, drinking hats and bongs. Most housing facilities also do not permit open flames so candles or incense are normally not allowed.  Explosives such as fireworks also have no place in your luggage. Do not carry large exercising equipment such as treadmills and stationary bikes since most housing facilities have gyms. Items that pose a fire hazard such as halogen lamps are not allowed. Other items that most schools don’t allow include weapons, water coolers, water beds, landline phones, hot tubs and large pieces of furniture.
