The goal is set to open the 6 new stations on the York University line on December 17. This subway extension is expected to simplify transport from the northwestern side of Toronto to Vaughan and adjacent towns. As residents look forward to a faster and more reliable transportation system, constructions are still underway to ensure the subway extension is open on the said date.
York University will benefit greatly from this subway extension. Two of the six extensions will serve the institution making travel fast and reliable for students. The first station, York University Station is strategically located in the heart of the Keele Campus. This station will help do away with the buses that flock campus every single day. The station is uniquely designed by Foster & Partners firm. All the exterior finishes are actually done. Signage has also been put in place as we await opening in December this year.
The second station, Pioneer Village Station, is located north of Keele Campus in between Toronto and the suburbs of Vaughan. This station is intended to offer a more convenient travel option for York University. The station will help students who are commuting from the northern side of campus. This particular station was designed by star architect Will Alsop of All Design
together with the IRI Group. It has a beautiful exterior finish with steel cladding which hardly goes unnoticed when you pass by. The Pioneer Village Station is almost complete. The only ongoing work is on the Transit Terminal situated on the north of Steeles Avenue.
Both stations, York University Station and Pioneer Village Station, are being opened at a time when the university is investing in new institutional and residential buildings. These stations will add life to the campus and take infrastructure development at York University to a whole new level.
The Schulich Research and Graduate Building is also currently under construction. This three storey building that’s occupying 67,000 ft² will cater to the university’s post-graduate students.
It’s going to house three new classrooms, offices for the faculty and seminar rooms. Designed by Baird Sampson Neuert Architects, the building will attach to the Seymor Schulich Building and will have lots of study space.
York U Student Center is also currently under construction. The new facility is located on the southern side of campus. The four-storey building was designed by Cannon Design, a renowned architectural firm in Toronto. The building’s construction is almost complete since framing and insulation is currently being installed. The project is set to be completed in 2018. Once completed, this facility will provide more study rooms, meeting rooms, student offices, lounge areas, recreational centers and so much more. York U students are really looking forward to the completion of the new Student Centre.
A new student housing facility is also under construction at York U. Popularly known as The Quad, the student housing was privately developed by Campus Suites. It is located right at the heart of campus and comes with exceptional features such as fully-furnished rooms, a gym, restaurants and food shops. Take a tour of the Quad Student Residence. Its beautiful exterior adds life and a dramatic appeal to Keele campus.
