How College Students Can Survive Being Homesick

Homesickness is one of the challenges faced by the new students. One may be excited to join college, but as soon as they leave, they begin to miss the things that they used to love doing at home. Being home comes with much fewer responsibilities and much more comfort. Even top rated schools will not give students that special feeling they get from home. If you are just about to join college, you can avoid and overcome homesickness by doing the following:

Take one day to figure things out

If you are feeling down, take some time off and evaluate your circumstances. Know what is making you sad and make a resolution to move on from that. Acknowledge the things that are making you homesick and come up with a plan of action on how you are going to overcome that. You have to face reality that you won’t be able to enjoy those things for some time. Take comfort knowing that the studies are a building block for your future. You have to be away from home so that you can build a career that will enable you to give your family the same level of comfort that your parents gave you.

Don’t be lonely

Locking yourself up in your room all day while chatting with friends and family on phone will make you lonely and homesick. It’s okay to check on your folks now and then but don’t turn it into an unhealthy habit. Get out of your room when you are not studying and meet new people. If you don’t have friends yet, hang out at the coffee shop or in social places where you are likely to meet people.

Turn college into your second home

Though college will not measure up to your home, you can put some effort to make it comfortable. Your old friends will still be important to you but while you are away from home, you have to meet new people and establish new relations. List the things that you miss from home and then try to recreate that in your new environment.

Join clubs and organizations

Boredom heightens homesickness. When you are bored, you think more about the things you left behind and you will end up missing them more. This might cause you to be stressed. Joining clubs and organization will keep you busy and keep you from getting bored. The club doesn’t have to be study related though joining one in your subject of study is likely to improve your studies. And there are a variety of social circles that you can join and have fun.

Know that college is the first step of being away from home

In life, you will have to move to different places for school, work and family. Going to college is just the beginning. One day you will change jobs and leave your old colleagues for new ones. Learning to adapt to new environments and make friends easily will give you an easier time in life.
