Sometimes while going through school, you can feel held back by your track record, especially when it comes to planning your future. Most students believe that they will continue to achieve as they have achieved before. This is not necessarily true. As a human being, you are able to set goals for yourself outside of all the data (grades) that you have accumulated in the past.
The best way to motivate yourself is to find a goal you are really passionate about and then find out what you need to do to get there. For instance, it could be that you are interested in pursuing a particular course at Cambridge. The best course of action would be to find out what grades you need to make that happen. Then you’ll need to work towards those grades, regardless of what you have scored in the past.
There are several useful tips that you can use to work towards your target.
Nothing gets lost as easily as time that has not been planned for. While it might be difficult to stick to a plan, it is not impossible. In fact, after some time of sticking to a particular plan, it becomes a habit. Set aside a few hours of study every evening and during the weekends. When you finally get into the university of your dreams, you will be so glad you stuck to the plan.
So you have set aside four hours of study every evening, but how do you fit two years’ worth of content into four hours of revision? Here’s how-you start by printing out the course specification or outline for every course that you will be studying. You will then identify the critical areas and focus on those. An example of a critical area is a chapter that you completely forgot. After working out the critical areas, move to those whose content you somewhat remember and finish up by going through the areas you are really good in.
Everyone learns differently, and different subjects require different forms of learning. If you learn by watching tutorials, focus on that. If you prefer to skim through textbooks first, and then go through the content once more, do that. Learning well will help you retain more content when it comes to the examination time.
Go through past papers and the accompanying marking schemes, with an intention of finding out what the examiners are usually looking out for. This will help you determine the best way to answer questions and score top grades.
It’s easy to feel bored, tired, demotivated and even overwhelmed when it comes to studying. Whatever emotion you feel, keep your eyes on the prize. Think of how great it would be to get great grades and study at your dream university. Focus on the future. Think of all the amazing opportunities that will come as a result of the sacrifices you are making. Push yourself and before you know it, you’ll be celebrating your good grades and your acceptance into a great university.
