The decision to choose a particular university should be preceded by plenty of research, so that you can make a final decision with the backing of solid facts. Many students already know this. However, more important that knowing this is determining the priority areas you should focus on when getting acquainted with your potential future alma mater. Here are some things you should have at the top of your mind when researching universities.
This is very important as it allows you plenty of time to dig deep and build a personal statement, essay and portfolio that you can be proud of. Give yourself an extra three months of the recommended time to get started on the research. For instance, if you intend to join college in September 2018, most schools will encourage you to get started with the research and applications in September of 2017. However, starting in July will give you the advantage of time, and you will not have to get caught up in the rush.
Using a prospectus to figure out if a university is a good match should be the first step, and not the only thing that you do. All colleges look great on paper. Go a notch higher and make calls, send emails and even visit the colleges. Only by interacting with these colleges a bit more personally will you be able to get a good feel of what life will be like for you were you to choose that college.
Think long-term and definitely, out of the box. If you are hoping to get a job in the proximity of campus, are there such opportunities in the community nearby? Is the college based in a location that supports your preferred way of life-be it fast paced or a bit slower? All these are important questions to ask when researching universities.
Some universities lean heavily towards presentations, while others prefer lectures over seminars and so on. Depending on what your preferred method of learning is, you will have to find out what the universities you are interested in prefer. It is necessary that you find a good fit in this area, otherwise you might end up hating the instructions you receive and your life at the university as a whole.
There exists numerous websites that have curated information on universities that students can use to make informed decisions. Do not confine yourself to any once source when it comes to getting information on the university you like. Remember, this is a big decision and you need to know what you are really faced with before you commit to it.
Lastly, do not be quick to accept the first offer that comes in. It is an exciting milestone to receive your first offer, but allow yourself some time to explore your other offers before making a decision. If you can, make a point of visiting at least 3 universities before settling on one.
