Doing Laundry in College Dorms: The dos and don’ts

Living in the dorms can be hard. This is more so when considering that you will be responsible for your own laundry. Life might be harder in the first few weeks. The good news is that you are not the first person to go through this process. Fortunately, there are so many sources that will help you get started on the right foot when you start living in dorms unlike living in apartments near York University. The purpose of this post is to educate you on how to handle yourself when doing laundry in the dorm.

Carry enough change

Not all washers/dryers within the dorm are free. With paid washers/dryers, there are various payment systems such as laundry cards, room key or coin-operated machines. Before heading to the laundry room, you need to make sure that you have enough change on you or enough money in your card. The last thing you want is to resort to stealing other people’s machines or asking other students for change when living in York University housing. This is something that is frowned upon.

Don’t lose track of time

One of the worst mistakes you can make is that of leaving your clothes inside the washers/dryers for long. In addition to making certain that you have the time to do your laundry, you have to ensure you have time to keep track of your clothes while they are in the washer/dryer. Yes doing your laundry can be boring but this should not give you the permission to leave before you are done. If you must leave, make sure that you have set a timer which will alert you to get back to the laundry room. Leaving your clothes in the machine for too long will disadvantage the other students in the York housing. The last thing you want is to frustrate your mates.

Be patient

From time to time, you will find the clothes of other students in the machine. You should refrain from removing them from the machine. Would you want to find someone touching your clean clothes? You probably would not. This is the same case. Even when there is no other free machine, you have to wait until one clears. Don’t touch other people’s clothes.

Do not be intolerable

When you are at home, you have the machine to yourself. You can separate your loads and take as much time as you want. However, when living in student housing York University, time is short for everyone. It is not acceptable to take over a machine for an entire day. Do everything possible to free the machine as soon as possible.

Be mindful of others

Last but not least, you have to be considerate of others. Follow the rules and plan ahead. Bring your own soap, dryer sheets, money and try to free up the machine as soon as you can.

Living in college dorms can be a hassle. However, so long as you follow the rules and be considerate of others, things will run smoothly.
